Mullen's acrylic paintings on birch panel are a contemporary take on wildlife and modern culture, heavily influenced by antique field guides and early scientific illustration. Using a realist painting technique, they draw attention to anatomy and juxtaposition of the environment both organic and man-made. These works are both an exploration of ecology and naturalism but also serve as personal allegories to share narratives about growth, parenthood and the human experience.
